MLW Network Exclusive: Offseason Will Test Front Office of Goodfellas

Last week, right here on this blog we questioned whether or not the Goodfellas would be able to bounce back from last year's debacle and put on a solid show in Wifflepalooza. They answered our critique by setting a tournament record for runs scored, and being arguably the most fun team to watch all day. But they were stopped cold in the playoffs, by a Goon Squad team that seemed just destined to be crowned champs. And the fiesta of runs and fun came to a screeching halt for the Goodfellas. While they have a lot to be proud of, they cannot dwell on this tournament too long. Right now the Goodfellas have the most questions of any team heading into the offseason. They had 10 players on the roster this year, but heading into the offseason they have just 3 players under contract for next season. 3. There's a chance that over 2/3 of the roster could be completely different. WP8 Cy Young winner Allen Rivera's contract is up, as well as All-star Brian Stanzione, and key players Justin Geri, Ernie Scoma and Cody Freese. All of them can be free agents. While in theory they'll have enough cap room to re-sign all of their high profile free agents, we all know it's the role players that make the difference. If they were to re-sign all of them, which is unlikely, they would be way over the cap. Basically, most of free agency hinges on the decisions of the Goodfellas. If they choose to let a big name or two free, other franchises futures could completely change as well. However, free agency won't begin until after the Wiffle Council Meeting, which should occur in the next 10 days.

WIFFLEPALOOZA VIII Awards, Standings and Random items

MVP: Jake Lambert (Flapacamingos)
12-19, .632, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 10 RS, 3 BB, 4 K, 4 XBH, 22 TB
Only player with double digit RBI, also lead the tournament in hits (12, tying a tournament record) and runs scored (10), for the champs. All 3 of his homers either tied or took the lead for the Flapacs.

Other candidates:
Jeff Ronchetti (Goons)
Al Etter (Flapacs)
Jeff Lunsford (Goodfellas)

Cy Young: Allen Rivera (Goodfellas)
1-0, 0.00 ERA, 14 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 8 BB, 20 K
Part of the greatest pitchers duel in tournament history, Rivera logged 11 scoreless innings in one game. The only player to post a 0.00 ERA while reaching the innings limit.

Other candidates:
Jeff Ronchetti (Goons)
Ryan Ricci (Flapacs)
Patrick Hennessy (Goons)

Title Game MVP: Nino Bonanno (Goon Squad)
3-4, 3 HR, 5 RBI
A performance for the ages, Bonanno kept his team within reach by clubbing 3 homers in the title game, the first man ever to do that. Despite being on the losing side, Bonanno left everything he had on the field, making him the player of the game.

Most Improved Player: Jeff Lunsford (Goodfellas)
8-12, .667, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 8 RS, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 XBH, 14 TB
J-nug was put in a spot to deliver for the Goodfellas, and he did just that. Lunsford's fantastic tournament was a huge jump from his last couple years, making his day the most improved of anyone. He and his brother Kyle are now the first relatives to win the same award, as Kyle won Most improved in 2011 (WP5)

Other candidates:

Patrick Hennessy (Goon Squad)

Top Rookie: Jeremy Wright (Mandingos)
4-5, .800, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 3 RS, 3 BB, 0 K, 3 XBH, 13 TB

PALOOZA WEEK: On Deck, The Big Day- 5 Things To Watch in Wifflepalooza VIII

So, tomorrow is it, the day we've all waited for since last July. And if you're anything like we are, it's been a very, very long offseason. But the fields are ready, the rosters are set, the shit has been talked and every team seems ready to roll on this glorious eve of the greatest display of wiffleball known to man. This is the first time since WP5, that we will have all 3 of the previous champions participating. It will also be the first tournament that each roster was assembled around the limitations of a salary cap. So since you're looking for something to read as you go to sleep dreaming of Palooza glory, here are five things to look for in tomorrow's tournament...

....

1. Can the expansion Mandingos present any kind of competitive challenge?
This team was basically formed out of necessity. While they have taken steps in the last week or so to become a more competitive group, they are still fielding 4 rookies and 2 guys with under a .250 career batting average. So there are more than a few reasons for doubting. But if these guys can pull together, play tough and stay positive, they might just be able to surprise one team. And if they can do that, if this team can win just one game, they will completely change the whole complexion and expectations of the tournament. Their schedule includes the Monstars, Goon Squad and Goodfellas, all three of whom have lofty expectations once again.

2. How will the other teams control and adjust to Matt Creamer?
He's the most dangerous man in the world on a wiffleball field right now. Meaning he has a target on his back. There may be only three teams that have to worry about him, but it's gonna be how those teams can keep him under control that's gonna make the difference. If Creamer is allowed to run wild like he did last year, the Monstars will guaranteed make the playoffs and likely reach the finals again. But if teams can keep him under control, that will force the rest of the Monstars to step-up. Not saying they can't, because they did solidly last year when they didn't even have to. But to ask that much of that group again, with all the pressure on them, leaves questions for that team.

3. Will the Goon Squad show up in good enough condition to function properly?
It's a simply equation. If the Goons show up not too hungover to function, they'll make the playoffs. They just will, it's that cut and dry. This team is more than due for a title, and they have the team to do it this year. If they're on-time and ready to roll, look out.

4. Can the Goodfellas control their own swagger and excitement?
They bring the noise, sometimes too much for their own good. The Goodfellas are the most hype, exciting collection of guys in the league. And if they can harness that energy and put it on the field, they are really really dangerous. But as has been the case with these types of teams in the past, usually more energy is spent off the field than on, and if they do not get off to a good start on Saturday, things could turn south. The Goodfellas need to conrol their own hype to be successful, if they can do that they'll have a positive day.

5. Will the Flapacamingos handle the pressure?
The team that constantly has the spotlight. The Flapacs are the definition of "built for now", and they have a team capable of repeatedly peppering the o-zone layer with wiffleballs. Their ceiling is higher than any other team, but that hasn't always equalled success for them. They've been built to win almost every tournament, and have made the playoffs in 6 out of the 7. But the last two years they have come up short, and it has lead to more than a few questions within the Old Farm Drive camp. This team has all the pressure in the world on them. If they can handle it, they'll likely win, but if not, they open up the door for other teams to find glory once again.

For Flapacamingos, The Window is Now

VINELAND- 3 World Titles, 22 total victories, a division title and an overall aura only matchable by the Yankees and divine figures. The Flapacamingos have built for themselves quite the legacy and the expectations to continue success. But with an aging squad and the rest of the league following their ways and catching up, there is an overwhelming sense within the camp on Old Farm Drive that the window of opportunity may be closing.

The Flapacs have turned in back-to-back disappointing results in Wifflepalooza, losing in the semi-final both years. In 2012 (WP6), the Flapacs held a lead into the 6th inning, when a misplay at the wall by now retired OF Tim Mills gave the Goodfellas' Mike Mazzochi a 3-run HR that would eventually be enough to win the game. The Goodfellas would go on to win the title. Last year the Flapacs dug deep to reach the semi-finals again after losing their first game in shocking fashion to the underdog Cuban Raft Riders. And a 4th inning HR by Matt Garvey in that semi-final gave the Flapacs a 5-3 lead. But once again the home run killed the Flapacs, as Steve Gonzalez belted a homer off of Ryan Ricci in the 6th, giving Fresh Cuts a permanent, 6-5 lead. Fresh Cuts would go on to fall in the final to the Monstars.

Opportunities have been plenty for the Flapacamingos historically, and often they have taken advantage of them. But this team is not getting any younger, and with their contract and salary cap situation the way it is, this could be their best shot at a title in the near future. Management saw the needs, and filled them with the best possible, affordable option in free-agent Ryan Hutchings. "Hutch", brings another power source (of which FLA already have plenty), an experienced pitcher, a solid defender and an all-around mad man.

On paper, there are no real holes, especially if everyone has a solid day. At their peak, this team is as good as you can assemble.. but that's the issue. Recently, even the year they won this thing (WP5, 2011), they haven't all played at their peak. The role players are one thing, but when the stars dont deliver, either at the plate or on the mound, it's hard to overcome mistakes. Obviously no one knows what the future holds. The Flapacs clearly have an elite farm system meaning any dip in performance shouldn't be an extended demise. But for the immediate future, and the league as we know it, now is the time for the Flapacamingos, and it's on the shoulders of their leaders and stars, to deliver the trident home.

Goon Squad Adapting and Surviving

PITTSBURGH- There is a large section of the sporting community that seems to frown upon ample smack talk and what could be perceived as hostile talk toward opponents who haven't said anything. Yeah, the Goon Squad isn't a part of that section. They're quite proud of it actually. They're the "bad boys" of MLW, a role they have enjoyed for a long time. But there is a solid franchise being re-built underneath all of the tough outer shell. The Goons have begun tapping into their exclusive fountain of youth. They thoroughly overhauled the roster from last year's team, adding rookies Joey Seagrave and Johnny Malatesta. And according to scouts, that's just the beginning.

The Goons seem to have a pipeline of young talent available to them at any time that they have began developing this season. Goon Squad is the most prestigious organization to never win a title and they seem to be more than tired of talking about it. As a family run organization, a fact they are very happy with, the plan seems to be keeping the core unit of both Ronchetti's, Bonanno and all Martini's together for the duration of time. Where the Goons realize they will have success is by adapting, adding young talent to the mix to spark things forward.

They are one of the two oldest organizations in the sports' history. Meaning the Goon Squad is here to stay, but for their own sake, and the sake of the league itself, this team needs a title. Offense has never been an issue for this team, but consistency has. They have alternated playoff appearances every year since WP4, but their only playoff win came in WP3. They are hoping that adding Malatesta and Seagrave help change this inconsistency. Malatesta joined the team in typical Goon Squad fashion, with an epic press conference in which he, and other Goon Squad members called out basically every other team in the league. Malatesta said he chose to sign with the Goons because he enjoyed the overall atmosphere that the organization brings.

There is clearly something working for the Goons, while it may be more of a longer term project, they seem to be on the right track. This team is built to win, but they will be even better built down the road. Ronchetti has admitted having a "black hole" within his lineup, but by developing these younger players, they can likely avoid that going forward. They will certainly be one of the more exciting teams to watch come Saturday morning.

PALOOZA WEEK: Media Day Interview - (Goon Squad) Mark Ronchetti

Q.       Mark, every year you guys talk smack. And every year, you don’t win the title. How frustrating is that for you, and is there any sense of embarrassment within the team?
A.      Well Al I personally find this question insulting and offensive. There is never a sense of embarrassment within the team because we know we are the best team. And it isn’t frustrating because if we wanted to win that bad we wouldn’t show up half drunk to the tournament. If we gave 100% every tournament we would have UCLA’d all of you pussies... But with all that being said the Goon Squad has talked within the confines of the team and we have decided that we will in fact be guaranteeing a championship this year. For the 5th straight year we feel like we carry a dangerous roster and will not lose a game this tournament. And yes we will be drunk.

Q.       What adjustments are you guys making this year?
A.    Well over the past couple Paloozas we have seen that hitting is a weak point with the team. We are known for usually having a “black hole” somewhere in our lineup. Last years training with Ryan Braun clearly didn’t pay off. So this year we have been training extensively with Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire. We heard through multiple sources that fast pitching has been banned in Palooza. If anyone tries to throw fast against us we want everyone to know that they will be inciting a riot. We are not scared to fight anyone. Especially the MONSTARS.

Q.       This year’s tournament is for a cash prize. How does that affect focus and preparation?
A.      The cash prize is extremely exciting and is actually going to motivate the Goonies to play for a championship this year. In previous year we have been known to give anywhere between 30-50% effort. This year we hope to give at max 70% effort. If that happens, we will not lose a game. The money we win will be spent on beer for next year’s tournament, when we show up drunk and beat all of you again.

Q.       The Monstars predicted victory last year, and delivered. As a bold predictor yourself, any shrewd words this year?
A.     Yes, Commissioner Dick Cheese, our predictions for this year are in. The Goonies will win every game on average by 10 runs. Our pitching will keep the opponent’s batting average under .100. The monstars may have predicted a championship last year correctly, but they through heat. If they throw heat this year Jeff will charge the mound and beat Kramers ass. We put Jeff through extensive gym training this year just to beat Kramers ass if he throws heat. Bench PR’s – 235, decline – 275 for 3 reps, incline pressed 100 lb dumbbells for 5 reps. Clears the YMCAs machine for tricep pulldowns for 6 reps. Can shoulder press Kramer. Intakes 375 grams of protein per day and takes 14 shits per day. Throw heat you fuck with the realist. You don’t wanna do that. We got thugs in this locker room if you throw heat we bring out the body bags.

Q.       You are arguably the 2nd best offensive player in the history of the game. How much would it mean to win a title for the only organization you’ve ever known?
A.    Ive been chasing a title for years and this year is looking bright for the organization. As long as none of you pussies pull some slick shit the Goonies will make a playoff appearance and prolly win. Personal acheivements mean nothing without that chip.

Q.       This tournament continues to be successful year after year. As it’s reach spreads, what’s one way you think the tournament could be better promoted?
A.     The monstars throwing heat is completely unacceptable. Yes we realize this question was disregarded but it is irrelevant.

Q.       What are your thoughts on possibly having teams from other parts of the country come in and play in Wifflepalooza? Do you think a team of all stars could beat the palooza all stars?
A.     Prolly the fuck not son.

MLW Network's Top 20 Players Right Now: #1 - Matt Creamer

The events that transpired during Wifflepalooza VII may go down as the most influential events in league history. That was the debut of Matt Creamer, and his performance that day set the wiffleball world on its ear. He became the first man to win ALL FOUR major awards possible in one tournament. MVP, Cy Young, Title Game MVP, AND Top Rookie. His performance in WP7 single-handedly has catapulted him to the top, making him the #1 player in the league right now. Creamer brings to the table an unbelievable arsenal of pitches, excellent command and a pitching IQ rivaled by few. That's just on the hill. At the plate he's a terror as well, bringing excellent bat speed, an incredible eye and tremendous line drive ability. His day at WP7 is the greatest single tournament display known to man, but the question for Creamer now becomes, can he duplicate it? The consensus is that every team in the league is game-planning against him. And during scrimmages he's been kept somewhat in check, although most of those situations aren't nearly equal to what anyone will face in Wifflepalooza. If he can put up numbers anywhere close to what he did as a rookie, the Monstars will in all odds repeat. But what is certain if he can do that, is he will remain #1 on this list.

Monstars Building the Next Wiffleball Dynasty

MINNEAPOLIS- It began back at the end of 2011. The Grand Wiffle Council had decided to award Rich Camacho one of two new expansion teams for the upcoming Wifflepalooza VI. That's when the process started, and at times it seemed like an endless road for the Monstars. But just 13 months after their less than stellar tournament debut, the Monstars were World Champions. And not just a "got hot at the right time" kind of champs, they were the best team in the league. They had earned every bit of glory and they relished all of it. They had overachieved, overprepared, and overmanaged.. to perfection. Everything they touched turned to gold and it wasn't one bit about luck. And all of these facts are what make this franchise scary for their opponents for years to come.

Camacho's wiffleball journey began in Wifflepalooza III, as a member of the then defending champion Flapacamingos. He then bounced around with a couple of franchises before finally reaching glory, as the captain and owner of the Monstars last year. And now, with experience and a title under his belt, he is beginning to build what looks like a possible Wiffleball dynasty. The Monstars are a solid example of loyalty. They've stuck with all but one of their originals all the way through to the start of this tournament, giving their prospects time to develop. Patience and loyalty.. and an eye for talent that will help them long term. They don't care what you think, they're gonna do things their way. Sure, Matt Creamer having arguably the best tournament of anyone EVER.. helped them finish the job last year, but it's not just him. Carlos Negron has emerged as one of the league's elite players, adding to an improving Vinnie Foschi and Camacho himself. Toss in rookie Steve Pistone, who has many scouts very excited, this team's potential is sky high.

Even if they do not finish the job again this year, which currently they are one of the top favorites to do, the Monstars certainly have a bright future. A stable future that is in good hands with their current leadership and involvement. Other than the Flapacamingos, the Monstars have logged the most practice hours of anyone by far since Wifflepalooza VI. They'll continue to have their skeptics, but that's fine with them. They're ready to prove you wrong, every single time. They want respect, but don't need it. And come Saturday morning, they're ready to defend what belongs to them.

Goodfellas Playing Against Odds, Looking To Surprise People Once Again

NEW YORK- Ever since their first season in the league, it seems as if the Goodfellas have always snuck up on people. Whether it's them playing above their on-paper potential, or teams taking them too lightly, every year it seems that the Goodfellas end up going further than most people thought they would. But last year was an exception. The Goodfellas went 0-3, and as the defending champions, it was the biggest one-year decline in league history. This year they are hoping to flip the script again.

If they're going to do just that, they've been putting in the work they'll need to. In his first full season as the new GM, Rocco Lombardo has seemed to learn from past mistakes as a manager. He's got himself a pitching staff, has weeded out the players that don't fit his system, and has gotten them on the same page enough to actually put in solid practice hours. They will however, be without former MVP Mike Mazzochi for most of the tournament. Conversely, should the Goodfellas find themselves in the playoffs by then, they will get a very solid boost at a premier time. They've been set as the 2nd largest long shot to win the tournament, yet there is a very seeable way that they could win the whole thing.

There's a certain swagger about this team this year that was missing last year. It may have been just one day, one game, one time, but the reaction after Mazzochi walked them off against the Flapacs in a scrimmage on Sunday night was one of a team that has bought in. A team that is on the same page, and willing to do whatever it takes to win. They're dangerous like that, and if they can hold on to that throughout the whole day on Saturday, they'll be no less than a very fun team to watch.

MLW Network's Top 20 Players Right Now: #2 - Jeff Ronchetti

He might be the most talented, youthful two-way player in the league. There has been dominance on the mound, and then there's what Jeff Ronchetti has been able to accomplish in his illustrious career. He is the only man with more than 35 innings pitched that holds a sub 2.00 ERA. Add in the fact that he has recorded over 68% of his career outs via the strikeout, Ronchetti is a bonified ace and dominant arm. But that's not the only reason he ranks this high on the list, he is a dangerous force at the plate as well. Developing as a havoc causer later in his career, Ronchetti has pushed his OPS over 1.000 with more than solid production in the last few tournaments. He is an extra-base machine, even when he does not hit it out of the park he often manages to take the extra base as successfully as anyone. He is the only player in league history with multiple triples, something of which there are only 6 recorded in league history. He is a fiery, competitive player that also likely leads the league in smack talking. No one can stop him though, because more times than not, he backs it up.

PALOOZA WEEK: Media Day Interview - (Goodfellas) Rocco Lombardo

Q.     You’ve been a captain/owner of teams before. This time the role kind of fell in your lap. What does it mean to you to be in charge of a storied organization like the Goodfellas?
A.      It’s refreshing to take hold of the reigns of a team again, and I couldn’t be happier with the team I have around me. If it weren’t for Allen as my Co-Captain we’d still be at square one, his ambition has helped us gain confidence. The last championship for us was Wiffle 6 and we plan on taking the title this year in Wiffle 8.

Q.     Last year you guys seemed to take it on the chin. Had a mistake filled first game and never really seemed to recover. What adjustments have you guys made for this year?
A.      For starters I would have appreciated a “No Homo” comment before the “taking it on the chin” statement. As you and everyone else in the league knew last year we weren’t on this planet during the tournament. With that being said I’ve set rules for us this year and our players have made improvements mentally in their focus and physically for performance (ex: Mazzochi turning into a fucking silverback gorilla). Allen and Justin’s knowledge of the game will keep us calm, cool and collected when and if we ever find ourselves down. I 100% trust this team.

Q.     Does your boss, “Super Steve”, know you’re a wiffleball legend? And if not, why?
A.      I’m upset you would bring Satan into a conversation about this amazing tournament but, yes we’ve had conversations about it only because of my request off from working in Hell. That is the extent of it; don’t really like conversations with the devil.

Q.     On paper it appears your team’s biggest hole is pitching. How do you plan to deal with that need and do you have any alternate plans should you need to adjust on the fly?
A.      Allen is our starter and a damn good one. Brian and I will take the other roles. We have a secret weapon if need be.

Q.     How do you feel about playing for a cash prize this year?
A.      Have you ever heard Shane McMahon’s WWE entrance theme? Yeah that’s what we’re about, if you haven’t I suggest giving it a listen.

Q.     What do you think can be done, if anything, to improve the reach and publicity of this tournament?
A.      Something as simple as you making the website is a start, I can post on forums if you’d like and for the small amount maybe we could do a radio advertisement in the future.

Q.     From “the Derecho”, to the creation of the “Wiffle Torch”, to title game no-hitters, and anywhere in between, what is your favorite Wifflepalooza memory?
A.      Well I do remember being 15 years old and riding my bike to Jakes house to help dig dirt for the mounds and set up the fields. The best memory though has to be my first title with the Flapacamingos in Wiffle 5. We had a great team and I’ll always remember

PALOOZA WEEK: Media Day Interview - (Monstars) Rich Camacho

Q. Last year you guys were longshots, you came very prepared and managed your team to what some people called “perfection”. Take us through the process of building your team and how you remember the day unfolding.
A. Well we felt that we had the ability to make the playoffs and potentially make a run, but I felt we needed another piece. We lucked out getting Matt and we were able to practice a lot and build the team chemistry needed to succeed. Everything fell into place last year and my plan worked to perfection.

Q. Also last year, one of your players Carlos Negron, boldly predicted you guys would win it all. How’s the team’s confidence heading into this year compared to last year?
A. Our confidence is about the same as last year. It's tough to win one Wifflepalooza, but to repeat is even tougher. We know what we need to do to reclaim the trident and we are going into this Saturday with focus, confidence, and determination.

Q. You’ve seemed to master the structuring of a pitching staff around the innings limit. How did you find the right formula so quickly?
A. Knowing that the inning limit is 14 innings, I strategized to use the right pitchers in the right spots. Gave our pitching staff what they could handle, when they could handle it. It was all about the right situation.

Q. How do you feel about playing for a cash prize this year?
A. I feel bittersweet about the cash prize because I wish we had done it last year, but a cash prize has everyone excited this year. I think the competition will get way more serious because of the money being involved.

Q. What do you think can be done, if anything, to improve the reach and publicity of this tournament?
A. I think if we could reach out to guys from the past and get some of their friends out here it could benefit the league. If we added two more teams and got the local newspapers to come out, things could get big. We could try to contact some leagues out in PA and see what they could offer to us as well.

Q. From “the Derecho”, to the creation of the “Wiffle Torch”, to title game no-hitters, and anywhere in between, what is your favorite Wifflepalooza memory?
A. My favorite moment in Wifflepalooza would have to be winning the championship of WP7. Going from worst to first was a hell of an accomplishment for our team and couldn't have been happier with the guys. Hopefully we can make this year my favorite moment and take the trident home again.

MLW Network's Top 20 Players Right Now: #3 - Al Etter

Historically the most feared hitter ever to pick up a wiffleball bat. Etter is statistically the league's all-time best and most clutch hitter. He ranks first in 4 of 5 major hitting categories, and as a two-way player ranks in the top 5 in every major pitching category other than saves. Etter's 3 career grand-slams are also tied for first all-time. Each of his Title Game MVP's include one of those grand slams, the only man to ever do that. A 3-time champion, Etter has seen a decline in recent tournaments, which results in him coming in at #3. His game has changed enough to where the Flapacamingos feel he better suits the team in the lead-off spot offensively. On the mound, where he claimed the Cy Young Award in WP2, Etter is attempting to return as a starter this year, and has faired well in the regular season and pre-tournament scrimmages (4-1, 3.04, 20 K's). Defensively he is a smart, solid player. If the Flapacamingos are to re-claim the title they will rely heavily on Etter to produce.

PALOOZA WEEK: Media Day Interview - (Flapacamingos) Al Etter

Q.       You have been a central figure in WIfflepalooza for the past 8 tournaments now.  What has that meant to you to be a part of something like this?
A.     I think anytime you get to be staple in something so popular and enjoyed that's always a good thing. It means a lot that people continue to enjoy the tournament and want to keep it going for years to come.

Q.      As being one of the best players in Wifflepalooza, ranking at or near the top in almost all categories, do you feel there is an added pressure going into the tournament to stay at that level?
A.    I would say that there's always pressure when you're playing in Wifflepalooza. It's a tournament unlike any other. You can prepare for months and if things don't go right it can all be over in 3 hours. Things move fast and when there's an expectation to win as there is with us, yeah I'd say there's always pressure, but it's a good thing.

Q.      The Flapacamingos have tallied three championships over the past 7 years, most in tournament history.  With that being said, is there a certain attitude that goes into the team that has become expected of a Flapac player?
A.    I'd say the only expectation I have of teammates is to bring it every day. Sure as a franchise we have an expectation to win, but all you can really ask of individuals is to keep a good mindset and give 1000%

Q.       There is always talking going on and of late its been between the Goons, Monstars and some of the Flapacs players.  Do you feel that this is due to a possible target on your back? And what does this add to tournament time when you all take the field?
A.    I'd say that if you have a target on your back to people you've been doing things right. As far as the Goons and Monstars specifically I consider a lot of those guys really good friends, so the smack talk really doesn't bother me. I find it humorous and just fuel to the fire.

Q.      How do you feel about playing for a cash prize this year?
A.    I love it. I've been wanting to do it for years, I'm glad it's finally a reality.

Q.      What do you think can be done, if anything, to improve the reach and publicity of this tournament?
A.    I just think we need to keep the growth progressing as it is now. Every year we gain players, via either new teams enterring or turnover on current teams. The social media accounts continue to grow and our reach is spreading still. I love the way things are moving.

Q.       From “the Derecho”, to the creation of the “Wiffle Torch”, to title game no-hitters, and anywhere in between, what is your favorite Wifflepalooza memory?
A.    Well all three titles are at the top of the list. But as far as individual moments probably Matt (Bocchese) and myself going back-to-back to tie the playoff game against Purple Drank Squad at the death in WP5. That changed the whole day's outlook and I feel it spurred us on to win the whole thing.

PALOOZA WEEK: Media Day Interview - (Flapacamingos) Jake Lambert

Q. Jake you’ve been the key part of this tournament since its conception. How proud are you to be doing this for the 8th time?
A.    The word “proud” does not do justice in describing how I feel about putting this showcase on for an unbelievable 8th time. Though people may not have thought this would have gone on for this long, considering the buffoons that are involved, I always believed that we would last this long and my only hope is that we can continue to put on this extraordinary event for years to come.

Q. The offseason for your team was an interesting one. How do you feel about this year’s squad?
A.     This year’s squad is one of our best if not our best ever.  Last time I checked we have 5 former all star pitchers and 6 former all star outfielders. No other team in the tournament can boast that kind of quality. Plus we added Hutch and Kerry, the two best offseason acquisitions this year hands down.

Q. You’re a great example of the kind of player that works hard and develops into a contributing star. What do you say to those who think negatively or doubt the principles that you’ve displayed?
A. I don’t know who thinks negatively of me but if they do that’s fine, all I do when playing is to try and get on base and score runs. Plus the tournament is at my house so if anyone thinks negatively of the way I play or of me, tough shit.

Q. How do you feel about playing for a cash prize this year?
A. This was a controversial decision, however I think it is for the best. There is huge potential that a fight may break out over the speed of pitching and the calls of the umpires (without a doubt instigated by the goon squad) because people are playing for money. However the pros of playing for money outweigh the cons. This hopefully should lead to more competitive games and an overall better tournament.

Q. What do you think can be done, if anything, to improve the reach and publicity of this tournament?
A. The point we are at I think it is fine, in terms of the reach of the tournament.  We have not able to sustain permanent fields that can support higher publicity. Until the fields and the wall are made more permanent, I think the tournament is fine how it is.

Q. From “the Derecho”, to the creation of the “Wiffle Torch”, to title game no-hitters, and anywhere in between, what is your favorite Wifflepalooza memory?
A. The “Derecho” was obviously the worst memory, and the “Wiffle Tourch” was probably the funniest. But personally my favorite has to be Wiffle 1. We built the field completely the night before, and we used two crates as a strike zone. Maybe it’s just nostalgia, but Wiffle 1 will always stand out because, for one, we won the tournament, and two, because it was the start of our unhealthy obsession with the sport of wiffleball.

MLW Network's Top 20 Players Right Now: #4 - Ryan Ricci

Another elite, dangerous offensive producer. In just a short time Ryan Ricci has become a top tier weapon at the plate. He's the main piece in the center of the Flapacamingos lineup that makes them go. He averages driving in more than a run per game, as well as holding a 1.400 OPS (4th all-time) in just 19 games. But he is most widely known for his performances on the hill, carrying the Flapacs to the title in WP5 lead by his infamous pitch known simply as "The Jesus". As a smaller guy, Ricci is by far the pound-for-pound best player in the league. His short quick stroke, coupled with a strong lower half really helps him drive the ball well as he's done in every tournament he's played in to this point. Going forward, Ricci still has room to grow and improve, which is dangerous for all of his opponents.

PALOOZA WEEK: Media Day Interviews: (Cuban Raft Riders) - John Bergen

Q. Your team made great strides last year in it’s 2nd season. But they seemed to come apart a little in the playoff game against the Monstars. What steps have you taken to prepare the squad for that big stage again this year?
A.     I feel that in the playoff game last year, we lost our focus and it showed. We focused so much on Matt that we couldn’t rely on him the whole time and that also greatly diminished our chances. With the free agent signings that we were able to get, I feel like we can contend again.

Q. A couple of late free-agent signings and a sinking division, that you guys are the reigning champs of, have you guys in what looks to be a solid position to at least reach the postseason again this year. Any predictions or insight into your strategy?
A.      I always believe that we have the ability to go all the way, however, anything can happen. Just going to go with the flow and have fun.

Q. Your teams have often been a lightning rod for criticism. What do you have to say to those who tend to hate on your squad more than others?
A.     Honestly, for me, I think its funny. I don’t mind it at all. They can talk all they want but when it comes down to it, you gotta leave it out on the field and that’s what we plan on doing. No matter if we beat them or not, they are gonna keep talking.

Q. As an advocate of the pitch speed rule, how do you feel now that the rule is firmly in place?
A.    I feel like its firmly in place and I like the direction that its going in.

Q. How do you feel about playing for a cash prize this year?
A.    It’s an added bonus, and it brings more competition. The other teams are going to play harder to try and win the Trident. It should be interesting to see how it all unfolds on Saturday.

Q. What do you think can be done, if anything, to improve the reach and publicity of this tournament?
A.    I think if you can get it out there via local newspapers or radio stations, you guys can get more participation and possibly more support financially.

Q. From “the Derecho”, to the creation of the “Wiffle Torch”, to title game no-hitters, and anywhere in between, what is your favorite Wifflepalooza memory?
A.    I would have to say last years Title game. The Monstars beat the now banned Fresh Cuts, who were juggernauts during the season, and just shut them down. They played with a chip on their shoulder they whole season and ultimately triumphed last year. Seeing Matt dominate in the fashion that he did was incredible. I couldn’t be happier that my friends after all the adversity they overcame to win last year.

MLW Network's Top 20 Players Right Now: #5 - Mark Ronchetti

The man who coined the phrase, "Legend of Wiffle", Ronchetti is as much a staple of this tournament as any human being ever. His numbers speak for themselves. He is undoubtedly the 2nd best offensive player in league history. Owner and founder of the Goon Squad (along with brother Jeff, and Nino Bonanno), Ronchetti is a greatly influential figure in the wiffle community. He had the first walk-off HR in tournament history, a 3-2 win over the Flapacamingos in WP2. He was the MVP of WP4 as well as being an all-star in all but 2 of his tournament appearances. His lone title game appearance came in WP3, and that is the one thing that fuels Ronchetti the most. The drive to win a championship. He has set the Goon Squad up for long-term success, but this year's team he'll lead is surely built for a run.

MLW Network's Top 20 Players Right Now: #6 - Brian Stanzione

A prolific and dangerous power hitter. Stanzione is a top tier run producer in a league full of them. His resume is impressive, he ranks 2nd all-time in RBI (45), and he boasts an elite 2.6 total bases per game for his career. MVP of WP2, Stanzione has gotten it done on the big stage as well. His 4 rbi in Championship games rank 2nd all-time also. His consistency at the plate no matter the success of his team is what puts him quite high on our list. Stanzione returns to the Goodfellas this year for the 3rd consecutive season after demanding a trade from the Flapacamingos after WP5.

MLW Network's Top 20 Players Right Now: #7 - Mark Rowan

Another fantastic two-way player, Rowan finds himself at #7 after participating in just two tournaments. His first tournament he found himself the MVP, although in a controversial decision the Top Rookie went to Danny Martini. Rowan brings some real thunder at the plate, boasting a .738 slugging through 40 plate appearances. He is a true five tool player that, with limited experience, has room to grow and improve still. Rowan is not currently signed to any of the teams that are to participate in WP8, after his team Fresh Cuts, was dismissed from this year's tournament. But Rowan is sure to be a participant again down the road, and whatever team aquires him is in for a solid performance.

MLW Network's Top 20 Players Right Now: #8 - Tyler Martini

The ultimate table-setter. The catalyst. The greatest lead-off hitter in league history, Tyler Martini has brought a dynamic to the plate that is tough to duplicate. He has the most plate appearances in league history, and he continues to deliver time and time again. He has constantly been on base, scoring runs and driving his team's offense no matter how potent or dormant the offense has been. A part of many huge moments. He has played in 3 title games, winning two of them. He scored the winning run in WP4 on Dustin Graiff's walk off single. He once bet an all-you-can-eat crab dinner in Atlantic City with teammate Nino Bonanno on his on-base percentage, and he won... A true legendary move. He has been as much a part of this tournament over the years as anyone and he will continue that role, as the lead-off hitter for the family run Goon Squad once again.

MLW Network's Top 20 Players Right Now: #9 - Dimitri Paraskevas

The first foreign national on our list, and best international player in the history of the game, Paraskevas is the second primarily pitcher on our list and returns to the tournament this year with the Cuban Raft Riders. Known best for being one of the toughest to hit in the league, Paraskevas brings a rare combination of speed and movement on his pitches. He is often seen as a controversial figure in the league for his confidence and desire to do things his own way. He ranks in the top 5 in multiple statistical categories, and at such a young age, the sky is the limit for Paraskevas.

MLW Network's Top 20 Players Right Now: #10 - Nino Bonanno

The first primarily Pitcher on our list, Bonanno is without a doubt the most legendary ace in league history. He threw the first pitch, recorded the first strikeout and got the first win in league history. That first win also just happened to be the first no-hitter in league history also. He's the only man with 10+ victories (12) and 100+ strikeouts (101). He's never thrown too hard, well, because he doesn't have to. No one knows exactly how many pitches Bonanno throws, but hitters accounts say it's at least 5 with 3 different variations of fastballs. His ability to throw any pitch in any count, and hit any spot he wants is what has made him a true bonified ace. In the last couple years he has struggled with command a bit, walking too many guys and pushing his ERA up above 3, which is the reason he's further down on the list this year than in years past. But if Bonanno can come close to the form he had in Palooza's past the Goons are in for deep run in this year's tournament.
