Home - by Emory Pierson - Player's Tribune
That’s what it comes down to — it’s right there in the title.
When I had to make my
free-agency decision, there was a lot going through my head, a lot of dirt
roads my mind was traveling down. Family, first and foremost, and what’s going
to make them happy, and give them the best life. Wiffleball, of course, and where
I’d like to play for these next several years. And then there was also the
gut-check aspect — just what I was feeling in my heart.
But for me, at the end of the
day, this was an easy decision. And all of those roads … they all led me back
to the same place: home.
They all led me back to The
Mandingos.
When I got here, three years
ago, there was a lot of rebuilding talk. A lot of, Man, this roster, I don’t
know … the Mandingos gotta blow it up. These experts, I think they wanted
us to trade this, waive that, tank this, draft that. That was most of the talk
surrounding our franchise. And I was definitely one of the names being included
in that talk.
And that was tough because I
think a lot of us here — we knew that, with the right level of commitment, this
could be a special place. We knew we had some special pieces here, from the top
down: From an ownership group that wanted to surround us with Bud Light, to a
star pitcher in Hutch that’d rather Evel Knievel down I-
76
… to an emerging young infield in myself and Dustin … to some of the best
wiffleball fans in the world, that not a lot of people even knew about.
And I just think about that
sometimes: How all of those people were telling us to blow this up, stop
drinking, and stop pissing on Bergen’s car all of those years ago — but we
stuck together. We took a look around at the group that we had, and we said,
you know, as a team, as a franchise, as alcoholics — we can make this into a
contender, into a place where wiffleball really matters, if we just see it
through. And that’s when the Mandingos decided to believe in me.
And we’ve been seeing it
through, and believing in each other, ever since.
So I kind of see this summer,
then, as … it’s almost like coming full circle. We ended our season this past year
with some disappointment. And that’s a couple of years, now, where — as
exciting as it’s been around here — I don’t think we’ve reached our true
potential. And you’d hear the whispers, you know, those same experts that were
telling us back in 2016 to stop blacking out in the outfield, there they are
again with that same talk in 2017.
But the difference between then
and now, and what I’m thankful for, is that this time the ball was much more in
my court. I was a free agent. Which meant that it was up to me to decide
whether I can piss myself while using the wrong side of the bat — is it worth
sticking around for, and running it back again, and seeing if we can take that
next step?
And like I said — to me, that
was an easy decision.
The answer is yes.
When I told my siblings that we
were staying Dingos, their reaction, man — O.K., I’m going to be honest: My
sister, she’s a bitch. But my brother … when I saw him fire up the skidder,
that’s how I knew for sure this was right. I could tell right away, just from
the look on his face. I could tell that if we’d left … for him, it wouldn’t
have just been about moving, you know, from any one place to another. It would
have been a lot tougher than that. We would have been leaving a place that is
really just … you know, it’s part of our family now. We’d have been leaving
home.
(And
yeah, just so you know, my brothers’s second reaction was, “Alright, Em — now
we gotta get a bigger backhoe!” We’ll see about that one.)
Anyway, that’s really all I
wanted to say for right now. I just wanted y’all to be the first ones to hear
it, and to hear it directly from me.
I’m coming back to The
Mandingos because my heart is telling me that I love beer — and because, for me
and my family, feels like the right thing to do. My heart is telling me that
this is the best team in the league, with the best wiffleball fans in the
league. It’s telling me that the Dingos can be a championship-level team,
sooner than later.
But most of all: It’s telling
me that, if you’re looking for people to believe in — choose the people who
can’t stand up by the playoffs.
And if you start a beer?
Man, you finish it.

MLW Network Exclusive: Player's Tribune - Jake Lambert, 5 years later - Remembering The Derecho.
2005. 2012. 2012. Katrina. Sandy.
Derecho. Three storms, three natural disasters. Only one happy ending. All
three of these storms had devastating effects on their communities, the
country, and the national psyche. Recovery is hard in the face of such gloomy
circumstances. New Orleans and the Jersey coastline still have not recovered
from the shit that was endured, as they continue to remain shitholes on par
with Chernobyl. However, Wifflepalooza and the Willie J. Huff Memorial complex,
with all the odds stacked against it have not only survived, but thrived.
On this
the 5 year anniversary of the devastating Derecho that rolled through on a
quiet and anticipatory night, I have been asked to reflect and comment on this
anniversary. As it occurred literally in my own backyard. It was six in the
evening and Al, Ricci, Pat and myself were putting the finishing touches on
Field 3. And I can say to this day when finished it was the best the complex
had ever looked to this day. We all went our separate ways and settled in to
prepare for the coming day, Wifflepalooza VI. Then in the middle of the night I
awoke, like Ms. Sera at a clam bake, in a pool of sweat. The power was out and
the winds were howling. I thought nothing of it, just a passing storm rolling
through. I awoke to the sight of my neighbor hauling an entire uprooted tree
down the street with his truck. It was at this point I sighed and thought to
myself “Fuck.”
I
walked to my backyard, through a brush and sticks in what looked like a
recently cleared forest. And when I made it to the back what I saw from left to
right was this: the Field 2 fence was completely uprooted and all over the
field. The fence on Field 1 was surprisingly intact. The wall however, was
another story. As in there was literally no wall, just five bare posts. I was
half expecting to see Ronald Reagan standing in front of it with hundreds of
Germans tearing it down. And then there was Field 3, or I should say there was
a lack of Field 3. I saw no signs that there was ever a field there at all,
even though I distinctly remember constructing and preparing it less than 12
hours earlier. Upon closer inspection of the missing wall I suspected the
pieces had flown into the woods, however all I could find was one small
triangular piece of plywood, no bigger than home plate. I looked and to this
day there have never been any pieces of that original wall ever found on the
complex or in its surrounding areas.
Then as
I went to check on the remains of Field 3 I realized it had ended up in the
woods, and all that would have to be done would be to pull it out and put the
fence back into the ground. My next decision was to call Al. first call, no
answer. Second call, no answer. Third call, no answer. Al’s history with phones
is like Ray Rice’s wife, it’s taken a beating over the years. I knew I wouldn’t
be able to talk to the commissioner until he arrived in person. I did what I
could until the reinforcement arrived. Ricci showed up with Bocchese, and we
all went straight to work. Al eventually showed and we reconstructed everything
we could as best as we could with what we had and the time we had to do it. As
we were in the rebuilding process, out of the woods we saw six men walking
towards us through the fields. It was the Monstars. They had walked here on
foot to come and help us with putting the tournament back together. And with
their help we were able to fix everything and were ready to put on another
tournament, this time it would be one for the ages, regardless of who would
win. There was only one problem, would anyone actually show up amidst the chaos
and carnage that hadn’t beseeched Vineland since the Italians kicked the living
shit out of the KKK and forced them to leave town (and coincidently take up
residence in the bigger shithole of Millville).
Slowly
one by one, car by car, team by team, people began to arrive. Not the full
eight teams that we were anticipating, but six full teams showed. The fight for
the most prized trophy in sports history was back on. The tournament went on as
most do with the Goodfellas eventually winning their first and only trident, in
what turned out to be an exciting set of semifinal and final games.
Wifflepalooza
had survived a natural disaster and the tournament continues to this day, with
Wifflepalooza XI being held at the end of July. There will be many people at
that tournament who did not experience that tragedy, and who do not know what
was endured. But for those of us who lived through it we now can look back and
say we were stronger than the storm.

ready for first pitch, and here begins our analysis.
11:00am
Field 1- High & Dry v. Flapacamingos
As
per Palooza tradition, the defending champion always gets to play the first
game on Field 1, as it is in the best shape possible for that game. For a 2nd
straight year, the Flapacs drew the team 2 card in the divisional drawing, and
find themselves the opponent in this classic match-up. This whole year will be
as tough to predict as any, especially since we do not really know a ton of
certainty for the teams coming back. High & Dry are defending champions,
but we have no idea the team they’re going to field, and we already know the
Flapacs have more questions than answers at this point. These squads have faced
off each of the last two tournaments, splitting the match-ups. Look for a hotly
contested, close game to start the day off, giving a slight edge to High
& Dry.
Field 2- Super Smash Bros v. Mandingos
With
the Mandingos re-shaping, they appear to be in an even better spot offensively.
Adding two proven hitters to an already potent lineup will do nothing but help.
The biggest question other than who’s gonna pitch for the Mandingos, is the
health of future hall-of-famer Ryan Hutchings. Hutchings, 26, broke his foot in
a motorcycle incident, and while he will most likely be a full participant in
WP11, his effectiveness is in question. Super Smash Brothers are in a tough
spot, they return most of the same roster that started with an impressive 5-0
win, but followed that up by not scoring a run the rest of the day, being
outscored 20-0 in the final two games, leaving them 1-2 and out of the playoffs
for a 3rd straight year. They will need to find more pitching, and
overall consistency if they want to get off to a good start again this year.
Edge in this one goes to the Mandingos.
Field 3- Back Door Bandits v. Goodfellas
One
of the more premier feature games to be played during the early part of the
day, Back Door Bandits, under new management, captain Mike Sheridan, are by far
the lead favorites to win WP11. Their first hurdle is a legendary franchise of
this event, the Goodfellas. Once again run by Rocco Lombardo, the G’fellas are
back and as hungry as ever. G’fellas are expected to return maybe the best
pitching duo remaining in the league (Allen Cruz & Mike Tedesco) which
might give them the upper hand in this match-up. While the Bandits lineup is
dominant, they do not have a dominant arm themselves. The Bandits will return
Eric Bomenblit this year, who hit what is one short of the record for homers
with 8, and one short of the record for RBI’s with 17, in his only tournament
appearance in WP9. He was courted heavily by a number of teams in free-agency,
but decided to remain with the Bandits on a one-year deal. These teams combined
for 24 runs in their match-up last year, won by BDB. The Bandits may indeed go
on to win the whole thing, but there has never been an undefeated team in this
tournament for a reason. Give the edge in this one to the G’fellas.
12:15pm
Field 1- Goodfellas v. Mandingos
It’s
the second game of the day for each team and one that will possibly decide the
playoff fate for one of these squads. If one or both win their first contests,
the winner of this moves to 2-0, and all but certain to reach the postseason
(Note: G’fellas missed postseason last year in spite of being 2-1, so it can
happen). Whichever ace does not throw against the Bandits for the Goodfellas,
will likely throw in this one, leaving a tough road for Mandingos hitters.
These two squads have met twice before, the first time a 24-0 G’fellas
slaughtering, and last year’s 4-3 Goodfellas win. While the Mandingos are
clearly closing the gap, this particular match-up is going to be a tough one.
Edge – Goodfellas.
Field 2- High & Dry v. Jeremy’s Team
We
know literally next to nothing about either team, but history has shown that
most teams in their first ever Wifflepalooza tournament, seem to struggle to
find their way. This being their first ever game, against the defending
champions, doesn’t seem like a positive scenario. Edge- High & Dry
Field 3- Flapacamingos v. Goon Squad
The
game’s oldest rivalry is renewed in this mid-day time slot as the original Goon
Squad lineup returns for another shot at finally capturing the elusive trident.
The Flapacs & Goons played in WP9, but the Goons were made up mostly of
prospects and free-agents at that time. While the Goons were victorious 7-6,
the real most recent previous match-up of these squads that will take the field
this year, was the WP8 title game. The two squads played 7 thrilling innings,
including 8 homers, 5 lead changes and one of the game’s all time defensive
plays, a robbed homer turned double play by the Flapacs’ Kris Lapsley. The play
had to be reviewed, and was upheld to turn the momentum of the game
permanently. The Flapacs would win their 4th title by a score of
9-8. This year’s match-up will be the 10th time the two teams have
faced each other in the history of Wifflepalooza, with the GS holding a 5-4
edge. Goons will be hungover / still drunk, and there’s a chance the Flapacs
will be coming off a loss, meaning they’re gonna need to win this one. Edge-
Flapacs.
1:30pm
Field 1- Super Smash Bros v. Back Door Bandits
This
match-up could end pretty quickly if the Smash Bros do not find a legit high-end
pitching performance. The Bandits, as discussed before, are loaded and ready to
get over the hump. If they play their game, this one will be just a blip on the
radar. Edge – BDB.
Field 2- Flapacamingos v. Jeremy’s Team
I
wish I had something more certain to speak on when it comes to Jeremy’s team.
While we have their roster, there are so many unknowns on it. This match-up has
potential to be an instant classic if the roster is high quality. Could
potentially be the difference in either, or both squads making the postseason.
If the roster is not high quality, expect the Flapacs to begin to hit their
stride in the 2nd mid afternoon slot, on their way to a playoff
spot. Edge- Flapacs
Field 3- High & Dry v. Goon Squad
Goons
might be just drunk enough by this point to start running their mouths. Let’s
put a firm controversy alert on this game now. High & Dry will be playing
their finale, and with the Goons knowing they still have one more tilt left,
expect High & Dry to play with some urgency. They’ll want to nail this down
to firm up a playoff spot in the East. If the Goons are coherent, and play
their game they have as good a shot to win this as any game they play. Edge- High
& Dry.
2:45pm
Field 1- Jeremy’s Team v. Goon Squad
If
all previous statements end up being accurate, this will be a battle for 3rd
in the East, with no real playoff implications. In the chance that there ends
up being a playoff spot on the line in this one, expect the Goons to have
former Cy Young Jeff Ronchetti ready to toss. He is as good a big game pitcher
as there’s ever been in Wifflepalooza, and as much as they tend to let things
get away from them, the Goons will want to make the playoffs if they see the
possibility before them. Edge – Goon Squad.
Field 2- Back Door Bandits v. Mandingos
In
a rematch of last year’s highest scoring game in Palooza history (Dingos won
16-15 in an upset), BDB and the Mandingos will face off with a playoff spot
almost certainly on the line. We can expect another extremely high scoring
event, with very little interest in quality pitching. However, when all is said
and done, the Bandits will likely find a way to get outs in a more timely
fashion and get another W under their belt. Edge – BDB.
Field 3- Super Smash Bros v. Goodfellas
What
will likely result as a stat-padding game for both teams, the Smash Bros and
G’fellas will face off for the first time since the 21-0 mercy killing by the
Goodfellas in WP9. Expect a better showing this time from the Smash Bros, as
like we said before, they’re one pitcher away from being a real threat. Edge –
Goodfellas.
