Wifflepalooza XX & A Letter from The Commissioner of Wifflepalooza, Al Etter

To our team owners, captains, players, fans and sponsors, I wanted to address my thoughts on some topics and discussions at the end of our 2025 League Year. By the time you are reading this, I have reached out individually to some of you for personal thoughts, and I thank you for your input. Your words and friendship mean a great deal to me.

RECAP, POLICIES & RULE CHANGES

Allow me to start with a recap of this year's tournament. Overall? Another smashing success. Six full teams, each got a minimum of four games in, and our playoffs brought new records, tremendous finishes, and an overall great ending to a long, great day. We started on time, and while we ran long for various reasons, I believe everyone left feeling they got their money's worth, and that is really the only broader goal we have as league management. Congrats to the Goodfellas on winning their fifth title.

Overall, the rule changes and policies that were put in place for 2025 were followed very well and added to an enhanced experience on the day. The fields held up better in '25 than they did in '24, and I appreciate everyone's help with that. We would like to take another step forward in '26 with this.

OFFICIATING

Another topic I want to address is the overall mindset of participants when addressing officials of individual games. This has been a long-running problem. One that dates back to our very first event over a decade and a half ago. Look, we have no better option for officiating. None. If we did, we would have exercised it by now. To acquire two umpires (and seemingly, two additional persons to keep the stat books for each game) would incur a cost of around $50 per game on average, which totals up to over $600 for the day, not even including playoff games or scorekeepers. We simply do not have that in the budget for a tournament where the total purse is typically around $1,000 total. If anyone is willing to step up and offer that type of donation, I am certainly open to the idea. As has been the case every time I have mentioned this over the last fifteen years, I do not see many folks lining up to foot that bill.

This is all to say, take a moment to consider the big picture. Four teams play at the same time; two teams are off. There is never a case where the same two teams are off in back-to-back windows. I give your schedule to your team, at least two weeks in advance, sometimes as early as months ahead. You have more than enough time to plan out your day, as far as restroom breaks, getting food/drink, and just taking a rest. You know in the window your team is off, at least two of you will be asked to officiate or keep score of a game. If you approach it prepared, knowing what's going on, with an attitude that you are in charge and do a good job, this operation is more than good enough. There are multiple ways to do this. Plan to have someone pick up food for you, make sure you have enough beverages in advance. Plan. Ahead. If everyone does that, the overall tone of this process will change for the better.

Additionally, tackle this from the other side. If you are the on the wrong end of a bad call, take it, deal with it, and move on. If an umpire is doing their best and paying attention and they get a call wrong? Too bad. You'll get the next one. Stop bitching and complaining for the next three hours to any poor soul that'll hear about it. No one else cares. Unless you are involved in the game in question, literally no one else cares what happens to you in that game. We are so sick of hearing about how bad the umpires are when YOU ARE THE UMPIRES. We're sick of hearing about how the stats are wrong when YOU KEEP THE BOOKS. You want it to be better? Start by DOING IT BETTER YOURSELF when asked instead of complaining. If you don't know how to keep the book, ASK. I will show you. Someone will show you. There's plenty of people that know how to do it. If that's too much to ask in your opinion, maybe this tournament isn't for you.

STATE OF PLAY

And lastly, but maybe most important piece. I had the opportunity to hear from a number of participants about complaints about the quality of play. While I would be inclined to totally ignore this nonsense, since most of it is from people who've complained about any and everything for years and yet have participated pretty much every year, I did want to address the idea that quality of play has changed.

See the table below. This tracks all numbers from each tournament over the last 6 years. Between 2022 & 2023, the mounds were moved from 40 feet back to 42 feet.

A screenshot of a data sheet

AI-generated content may be incorrect.

As you can see, in the 3 years since the mounds changed, hits are up 8%, runs are up almost 19% (!), walks are up 5.5% but down this year from the last two years, strikeouts are down 20%, and home runs are up 5%. What does everyone want? Action, right? Less walks, less strikeouts, more homers, hits and runs. I agree. I like action. I do not enjoy a game with 25 walks. I get nothing personally from taking 4 balls and going to first. I like to hit; I have my entire life.

That being said, the team that won this year won in no small part to their ability to walk. They take their bases. Is it the most aesthetically pleasing way to play? No. Does it work because their guys who can't slug well take their walks and get on base for their guys who do? Hell yes! If you don't like that and don't want to play that way, then don't play that way. But if you have a problem with how the Goodfellas played, instead of complaining to me, or Jake, or Ryan Ricci, or Pat Ney, none of whom are members of the Goodfellas, why don't you throw the fucking ball over the plate. The only team that has any control over you getting them out, is you. Throw more strikes. Throw better strikes. It can be done, I've seen it. I understand if you feel it is not as fun of a way to play, but we are not going to turn our rule book and tournament format upside down to try to change the way one team plays.

In the 3 years since we made the mound change, we have seen a 15% increase in balls in play. In 2022, 69.3% of all plate appearances ended in a walk or a strikeout. This past tournament, that number fell all the way to 54.2%. Would I like that number to go even lower? Sure. And that is why I do not want to be dismissive of this topic. I am making a call to all participants for ideas. Let’s make this thing better. I am open to any ideas no matter how stupid you may think. I do not want to change our sport dramatically, but if there is something we are currently missing that would make things better, we'd be foolish not to consider it.

ROAD TO WIFFLEPALOOZA XX

Lastly, I cannot wait for next year. Not just to get another shot at winning, but to be able to put on this tournament for the 20th time, is one of the most sentimental and interesting things I've ever done. I say this often, but if you went back in time and told Jake & I in 2008 when we began planning the first one, that almost 20 years from now you'll be putting on this tournament for the 20th time, we'd have said absolutely no way. We are putting out a call now, to any and every person that's ever been a part of our tournament, to please come out to next year's tournament. We plan to have an extended introduction, where we will call each person out by name and allow them to get the recognition they deserve. The best part of this tournament is that it's fueled by you, the participants. We'd have stopped a long time ago if you all stopped coming. I know some have over the years for one reason or another, but there's an unspoken bond among the 238 people who've played in this thing. It's unique, and a shared experience, and we'd love to have you out there. We will announce some other exciting things related to this tournament going forward, and we'll decide on a date (either August 1st or August 8th) as soon as we can. But that's the first part of it is inviting everyone who's ever played back home. If you still are in contact with people who haven't come out in a while, but you know they've played before, please reach out to them on my behalf.

Looking forward to hearing from as many of you as possible, and we'll see you soon.

Thank you all,

Sincerely,

Alfred B. Etter

Back On Top; Goodfellas Overcome Adversity to Win Fifth Title

VINELAND - Who would've thought that adding back one of the games all-time greats, as well as calling up your top prospect would be all you'd need to go on a legendary run. The Goodfellas on Saturday, by returning Brian Stanzione, adding Anthony Lopez, getting an historic day on the mound from Justin Geri and; with one of the most stunning swings we've ever seen in this tournament, did just that. It's difficult to say that a 6-0 team needed some things to come together to end up champions, but this team will tell you it's true. After jumping out early on the PA Pork Missiles to win their first game, the G'fellas narrowly escaped the Goondingos with some controversy about their application of the time limit rule to win 5-3. They then were the beneficiary of a bad throw by Flapacs 1B Al Etter, allowing a very aggressive Brian Stanzione to score the winning run of a 2-1 win. "Just trying to make our own luck a little bit" said Stanzione, who's return to the tournament was sorely needed by the Goodfellas, as he would go on to drive in 11 runs and win Title Game MVP. "We just felt like that was a moment to push things and luckily for us it worked out."

By the time they reached their final regular tournament game, it was clear the Ironballs were out of pitching and the Goodfellas pounced, defeating them 14-0 on their way to the division title and #1 overall seed in the playoffs. They would go on to a re-match with PA Pork Missiles, who by then had sorted themselves out and were looking quite dangerous. They gave the Goodfellas all they could handle. Leading 7-6 in the bottom of the 6th, after an incredible play by Justin Baeringer to throw out Billy Jackson at home, the G'fellas were in dire straits. Down to their last out, winning run at 1st and team captain Rocco Lombardo at the plate. Lombardo had talked earlier in the week about how many times their season had ended like this. Something had to change. Lombardo, with his first hit of the day, let alone HR, drove a 3-run walk off shot over the wall in left, stunning the Pork Missiles and the crowd watching and delivering the G'fellas to their first title game since 2020.

"I just decided that was it, we had to win it there. I've got a walks record I'm proud of, and I'm sure I couldve gotten on and passed it along to the next guy. But sometimes you have to just make a choice, and thankfully that thing got over. I still can't believe I did that", said Lombardo amidst the champagne celebration in the locker room of the Willie J. Huff Complex afterward. It was a remarkable finish to one of the best semi-finals we've seen in a long time. It's the first walk-off in an elimination game since WP12, when teammate Jeff Lunsford hit a walk-off home run off Flapacs RHP Eric Bomenblit.

Once they reached the title game, Justin Geri set the tone. He set the tone all day. Geri threw 17 innings, striking out 27 and giving up just a single run (a solo HR by Etter) all day long. He was tremendous, and steadied the squad at times when they needed it most. Historically, the Goodfellas, like most teams, play well when they're ahead. Geri's title game start gave them that opportunity. Anthony Lopez, who had an exceptional rookie season (finished 2nd in ROY voting), drove in 2 early with a double. The G'fellas were off and running. After Stanzione homered in the 4th to make it 3-0, Geri had finished his 4 innings he was eligible to pitch and handed it off to Mike Tedesco. Ted struggled a bit at first, allowing back-to-back homers to Ken McCormick and Jake Guglielmi, to allow Bert Brigade back in front. Bert, seeking back-to-back titles for the 2nd time, were in the driver's seat now. But after Tony Donato had to exit after his 5 innings, the G'fellas went to work on McCormick. 3 walks to start the inning brought Stanz back up. He had his signature moment. A Grand Slam in the bottom of the 6th put the Goodfellas head for good. Even after Taylor Cheli homered to make it 7-5, Ted slammed the door shut by striking out McCormick to end it, and the G'fellas had their 5th title. It ties the Flapacs for the most titles in WP history. "It's great to win and reach the top with the boys again" said Tedesco. "Really, we've worked at this a long time and we've come up short too often recently. We think we're the best to ever do this and it's good to see that pay off this time".

Facts & Figures-

- G'fellas and Flapacs are tied with 5 Championships each, but the Goodfellas 8 title game appearances are the most by any team. They have appeared in 47% of the title games out of the 17 tournaments they've played in, going back to their time as "Rip City"

- Goodfellas also posted the 2nd ever undefeated run to a championship. The only other? Also the G'fellas, back in WP13 in 2019

- Rocco Lombardo reached both the 100 career walks and 100 career games played marks, the first to reach both

- Jeff Ronchetti reached 90 career hits. He also became the first pitcher to reach 200 innings pitched in a career.

- Dustin Graiff reached 20 career home runs, the 16th member of that club

- Ryan Ricci reached 40 career home runs, the 3rd member of that club

- Sawyer Brown reached 40 career hits, 50 career runs scored and 20 career home runs as well

- Allen Cruz reached 70 career hits and 50 career RBI

- There have now been 238 different players to participate in the 19 Wifflepaloozas

- Pat Ney recorded his first pitching victory, since throwing a perfect game to defeat Goon Squad all the way back during WP3 in 2010. It's the longest stretch between pitching wins in tournament history, at 5,523 days, or 15 years, 1 month and 14 days.

- Tony Donato became just the 3rd pitcher to reach the 200 career strikeout mark

- Al Etter became the first player to reach 100 career runs scored

- Wifflepalooza XIX saw 4 different pitchers record saves. That is a single tournament record.

- 249 total runs scored are the most in a single 6-team tournament in Wifflepalooza history.

- Bert Brigade's 75 runs scored are the most by any single team in tournament history, and their 38 runs in the semifinal game v. Ironballs are the most runs scored in a single game by any team in tournament history.

- Wifflepalooza XX is expected to be considered a week+ long event, with the actual wiffleball championship tournament taking place either August 1st, 2026, or August 8th, 2026, with an official decision to be announced at a later date. There are expected to be other events as a part of this grand spectacle, such as a HR Derby, Legends Game, golf outing, luncheon and more. Stay tuned for updates.

220pm- v. off

NOTES:

Internally, the G'fellas feel pretty good about this group. 2 elite arms? Check. 2 additional bats they didnt have last year? Check. What's not to like? All this group is worried about is execution and performing up to their level. Geri and Tedesco pack a mean 1-2 punch, and with the call up of top prospect Anthony Lopez and the re-addition of Brian Stanzione, the Goodfellas are once again dynamic. With a potential core lineup of Geri, Jackson, Stanzione & Lopez, this is the best roster they've fielded since 2020.

NOTES:

Pork's odds of success change dramatically if Dano Volpe ends up in the mix. At the time of this writing, it is still unclear if he will be able to go. Without him their pitching situation becomes very murky. There's no clear cut ace, Justin Baeringer and Tim Durante look to be the only guys with experience. Baeringer has proved himself to be more than capable, but inconsistency with control has popped up at times. The Pigs did add a bat, bringing former Temp Agency all-star Brandon Sturgis in on loan.

NOTES:

The Goons have their work cut out for them this year. Striking out in free agency has left some significant holes that they'll have to fill internally. It's unclear who their 2nd arm is behind Jeff Ronchetti, who's still good enough to win them  a game or two on his own, but he's gonna need some help if the Goons are to advance to the playoffs. The top candidates to follow Ronchetti on the mound are Ryan Hutchings or Patrick Hennessy, but both of their status's are murky entering the Palooza week, as Hennessy is dealing with injury and Hutchings is rumored to be taking a step back. Beyond those two they could try 2nd year player Connor Viglianti on the mound. Their bats are inconsistent, but if they are on the ceiling for this lineup is quite high. 5 of the 6 spots have the ability to go deep at any time. They'll be longshots in this one, but if they can plan out and execute Ronchetti's innings properly and the lineup can get some slug, they'll have a shot.

Odds: +170 to win, +145 to reach title game, +105 to make playoffs

1pm- v. Goodfellas, Field 2

140pm- off

220pm- v. Goondingos, Field 1

NOTES:

Their 12-man roster and injured list could be considered the best in the sport, but down a significant portion of their team the Flapacs will have to make due with pieces they weren't expecting. Their 2nd pitcher, like a lot of teams, might be an issue. It's expected that the bulk of those innings will come from rookie Marshon Green, with veterans Al Etter & Rob Humes to fill in behind him. Ryan Ricci will lead the way as the ace once again with Kevin Engasser out, but his status is also up in the air. The one thing that the Flapacs believe they can definitely count on are the bats. They believe with a year of experience under his belt, OF Tyler Suppa can develop into a star, and the youth and talent of Green and, if he can play, Christian Willis will provide a serious boost to this already dangerous lineup. Their 6th roster spot remains a question. The Flapacs have gone with quantity over quality to fill it out, having a record 10-active players for the day of. Whether it will be the right mix is still unknown.

1pm- v. PA Pork Missiles, Field 1

140pm- off

220pm- v. Ironballs, Field 2

NOTES:

Bert returns almost an identical roster to the one that was good enough to win last year's tournament. At time's last year, it felt like things fell into place well for Bert, but the quality of talent and shape of this roster is undeniable. Still boasting two top-line pitchers, their ability to apply pressure on the other team's pitching and defense makes them a tough beat. They have to be the favorite again this year. Keep an eye on Tony Donato throughout the day. The 3x Cy-young winner is still certainly a force, but has shown some cracks the last two years dealing with control issues. His performance on the mound could be the key to the whole thing for Bert.

Wifflepalooza XIX Media Day Coverage

Today was the annual Wifflepalooza Media Day. Press from all 50 states and 18 countries world wide were in attendance to meet the teams and gather quotes and comments prior to this year's tournament. Below, are the general opening statements from each of the 6 teams in this year's tournament.

JEFF RONCHETTI, OWNER, CHAIRMAN AND CAPTAIN OF GOONDINGOS

Q: How do you feel about your teams chances?

"First and foremost, I always look forward to this time giving me a platform to address the entire league. As usual, we feel great about our chances. The word "humble" is not in our vocabulary. If Terrell Owens were a wiffleball team, he'd be the Goondingos. We're confident in our abilities, we state it loudly, and year in year out, we know we're the most important match up for most teams in the league. We see it every year-- pretty much every team throws their ace against us. These teams know that fumbling a game to the Goondingos can make or break their tournament, and not just that, but as seen in 2023, if you let us get hot, we will roll our way into the championship. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, we take it as a sign of respect that these bozos are aware that they can't let us heat up, but we know if we don't show up with our A game, it may be a long day.

The most worrisome thing for me, as a player, GM, and coach, is the deteriorating knee of top prospect 1pac O'Hennessy. You hate to see a guy who should be entering his prime struggle through multiple years of surgeries and rehab to get himself on the field. The past two years, the impact of the surgeries and injuries was clear, with back to back down years at the plate in both average and power, and no attempt from him to even set foot on the mound either year. In the field, it's become even uglier, famously overthrowing 6'8" and 7'2" wingspan perennial gold glover & all-star Dustin Graiff on a routine 4-6-3 double play last year. On top of this, his once notoriously aggressive baserunning has been relegated to jogging the bags. What was once a 5 tool stud prospect has become a shell of himself, and the potential of this happening is something our organization has been coming to grips with for a few years now. Hitting coach Marky Smalls has tirelessly worked with him to transition into a pure power bat for this year, to try and prevent him from having to leg out any balls in play and further damage his knee. We're projecting him to bat about .200-.250 this year, but also expect this lower average to come with at least 4 HR's and 6 RBIs, and he also may have to take over for switch hitting catcher P-Money "Jorge Posada" Gervasio behind the plate if the knee won't allow him to take the field."

Q: What are you looking forward to most?

"As an organization, we pride ourselves on finding ways to bother Commissioner Alfred Etter on tournament day, so if we had to pick one thing, it would likely be that. Whether it's arguing with him about rules that have existed for 10+ years, bringing a beer pong table onto the field in a game where the Flapacs need us to lose by no more than 15 runs to make the playoffs and making them sweat it, hosting a meatball fest, or showing up an hour late, we always do our best to make the day as difficult as possible for him.

If we had to choose one thing, totally unrelated to bothering Al, it would absolutely be beer consumption and beer showers. Nothing feels better than getting a lukewarm beer with cigarette ash thrown directly into your eyes when crossing home plate on a brisk 105 degree day."

Q: What's your key to winning?

"Our key to winning is the vibes we bring to the tournament. Take a look around on Saturday, you'll see a lot of sober & pissed off 30+ year old men who think they're playing for a shot at an MLB roster spot if they put up good enough numbers. The Goondingos have decided to zig when the rest of the league zag'd, we show up, kill a keg, and play some ball. The vibes are immaculate, and sometimes we hit the perfect level of drunk to actually win some games. We've discovered that we cannot play at all between the BAC ranges of 0.00-0.31. Once 0.32 is eclipsed, the sweet spot is open; the biggest issue is how long it stays open. We've also discovered that once BAC eclipses 0.47, we can no longer competently play. So generally our strategy is to get tewhere between 8:00-11:00am with the BAC sitting right at the precipice of greatness, a cool 0.30-0.31 right before our first game."

AL ETTER, PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER OF FLAPACAMINGOS

"We have nothing but the highest expectations as always; and our ability to maintain the standard is paramount to the fabric of our organization. That being said, we're not fools. We know we're not at 100% right now from a standpoint of availability or health. Way we see it, our backs are against the wall, so why not play loose and have some fun with it. We don't have our main horse(s) like normal, so some other guys are going to have to step up and im excited to see that. Maybe we crack a few beers and team up with the Goondingos for another public meth orgy. Idk, we're gonna have to think outside the box it seems, so let's go nuts with it"

ALLEN CRUZ, PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER OF IRONBALLS

"Let me start off by saying what an epic tournament we get to compete in every summer. Nothing we look forward to more than grilling burgers and glizzy goblins whilst hitting a shit ton of dingers. We've come up short past few years but much of the same squad if not all are back and we're not going away any time soon. Back to back years we're being put to the test against the best of the best. These games will have a playoff atmosphere no doubt but we live for the challenge and welcome it gladly. The table may very well come down to run differential and H2H but why not us? 2-2, scratching and clawing but into the playoffs yet again, book it danno."

ROCCO LOMBARDO: CAPO, BARONE SANITATION: CHAIRMAN & PRESIDENT OF GOODFELLAS
"How many times we gotta tell you to not put too many onions in the sauce?"

TIM DURANTE, OWNER, PRESIDENT & CAPTAIN OF PA PORK MISSILES
"We feel pretty good about what we have this year. We're obviously going to miss Dano (Volpe), but the addition of Brandon Sturgis is big for us. Not sure why he played under a different name two years ago and obviously that caused some confusion paperwork wise for the league office, but glad we got that sorted out and he'll be a part of our squad. Just gotta take it one game at a time and put our best foot forward and whatever other cliche's you guys wanna throw in there ok see ya."

TAYLOR CHELI, OWNER & GENERAL MANAGER OF BERT BRIGADE

Everything You Need To Know - Wifflepalooza XIX

The 19th Wiffleball Championship of the World kicks off Saturday as is tradition, and it should be full of the same excitement and great competition as always. Below we line out for you some of the more interesting stories and give you the overall layout and timeline for the day.

Day's schedule:

8:00am - Fields open for optional bp/practice (DO NOT use dirt areas)

10:15am- Players are asked to arrive by 10:15 in order to settle entry fee's, get intro information correct and meet with their teams.

        - The earlier you arrive, the easier parking will be. There is limited street parking on the east end of Old Farm Drive. Teams and players are encouraged to carpool where available. Additional parking is available on the west end of Old Farm Drive and some other limited space on Brewster Road. Both of those however are longer walks. Drop off zones in the cul-de-sac of the east end of Old Farm Drive can be used to unload tents, coolers, spectators, etc.

10:40am- Introductions begin (done by Al Etter, Jake Lambert & Mike Tedesco)

11:00am- First set of games begin

3:10pm- Playoffs begin

4:20pm - Championship begins

Approx 5:30pm - Swanberg Cup is awarded and the tournament is complete.

Schedule Highlights:

11:00am - Field 1 - Bert Brigade v. Goondingos

    - As per tradition, the champions get to kick the day off on Field 1, and in this one they'll take on the squad that usually isn't asked to participate in this window, but you'll get (maybe?) their best effort in the first game. This is anticipated to be 3x Cy-Young Winner Tony Donato v. former Cy-Young and Goondingo ace, Jeff Ronchetti as the pitching matchup.

11:40am - Field 1 - PA Pork Missiles v. Goodfellas

   - A rematch of one of last year's semifinals sees the Pork Missiles and G'fellas face off again. Last year, Cy-Young winner Dan Volpe tossed one of his 3 no-hitters in this matchup, sending Pork to the title game for the 2nd time in 3 years.

1:00pm - Field 1 - Bert Brigade v. PA Pork Missiles

   - A title game rematch pits these two against each other once again. Last year's championship (a 15-5 win for Bert) was marked with some controversy, as for the 2nd time in history, the fence rule came into play in the title game. The first time it was Bert, back in 2018, as Sawyer Brown fell into the fence giving Goodfellas a 5-run boost, that ultimately led to them winning WP12 by a score of 7-3. Last year didn't see the penalty end as a deciding factor, but it certainly changed the course of the game, as Pork led at the time of the penalty, 4-3. They will get another shot at Bert this year, in this game.

1:00pm - Field 2 - Flapacamingos v. Goodfellas

   - The oldest active-running rivalry is renewed, as the 5x champion Flapacs take on the 4x champion Goodfellas. These two will face for the 18th time, as the Flapacs hold the all-time rivalry 10-7 but the G'fellas hold the edge in the playoffs, 3 games to 2. It's possible the pitching matchup here will be a battle of all-time legends as well, as Ryan Ricci could be making his 11th career start against G'fellas, while Mike Tedesco & Justin Geri could be making their 7th & 6th starts respectively against the Flapacs.

2:20 - Field 2 - Bert Brigade v. Ironballs

  - Our other semifinal rematch occurs in the final window of the day, as Bert and Ironballs face off for the first time since the narrow 7-5 victory that send Bert to the title game last year. This late in the day it's hard to predict what we'll get in this game, but while Bert have won 6 straight against IB (including 3x in the playoffs), these two teams always play each other close.

What to watch for:

- If the Goodfellas reach the title game, captain Rocco Lombardo could become the first player to particpate in 100 games in tournament history

- Flapacs C/1B Al Etter needs 5 runs scored to be the first to 100 in tournament history

- Flapacs P/IF Ryan Ricci needs 1 home run to reach the 40-HR club. He also needs 11 1/2 innings pitched to reach 200 career-innings.

- Goodfellas P/IF Justin Geri needs 6 home runs to reach the 40-HR club

- Goodfellas IF Brian Stanzione needs 5 RBI to reach the 100-RBI club, while teammate Justin Geri needs 7 RBI to reach the same feat.

- Goondingos RHP Jeff Ronchetti needs 2 wins to reach the 20-win club. He also will be the first pitcher to eclipse 200 career innings with just 3 innings pitched. He can also be the first ever pitcher to 300 career strikeouts, with 20 on Saturday.

- Bert Brigade RHP Tony Donato can reach 200 career strikeouts with 14 on Saturday

- Goodfellas RHP Mike Tedesco can also reach 200 career strikeouts with 20 on Saturday

2025 MLW/Wifflepalooza Roster Rights & Updated Free Agent Pool

In 2024, the Office of the Commissioner of MLW announced that the rules regarding roster size & construction are being codified. These guidelines have existed for some time now, & I can't think of a time where it's been an issue, but just to get everyone on the same page, here it goes.

MLW/WP rosters work similar to MLB rosters. You have an "active" roster (basically anyone you're having play for you on tournament/game day) and you have an official "12-man roster" (like a 40-man roster in MLB). Anyone on your 12-man roster is eligible to be used/"called-up" at any time. Same goes for de-activating/"sending down". Team captains/owners do NOT need to notify the commissioner's office when calling up/sending down players, only when there are changes to the 12-man roster.

It is not a requirement to fill all 12-slots on your 12-man roster. You STILL MUST field a minimum of 6 players for each tournament game, or face penalties listed in the official rulebook.

- You may trade for a player on another team's roster, so agreed upon by captains/owners of each team.

- To add someone to your 12-man roster, you simply must notify the office of the commissioner. If you need to create a corresponding move to clear room, that can be in the same notification. Text, email or tweet are acceptable forms of notification.

- To remove someone from your 12-man roster, you can outright release (they automatically become a free agent) OR waive the player (other teams have the option to claim this player and pay the releasing team a small fee ($25)). Notice of this transaction must also be given to the office of the commish to notify other teams of the availability of said player.

- The only additional scenario I can think of where a player would end up off your 12-man roster is an event where a player leaves to start their own team. This is a dealing that would be handled internally with that player. There is no set agreement or terms that tie that player to your franchise once you allow them to branch off to own/captain their own team. Should that team falter, or no longer have a place within WP, that player (and subsequently all players on their team) would become free agents unless otherwise designated by the office of the commissioner.

- Players with confirmed injury may be placed on minimum 5-day injured list to activate another member of 12-man squad. Player with long-term confirmed injury may be placed on a minimum 60-day injured list and would not count against 12-man roster limit, but proof of injury must be submitted to the office of the commissioner.

INFORMATION BELOW IS CURRENT AS OF JULY 25th in the 2025 LEAGUE YEAR

BELOW is a current list of every player known to be on a team's 12-man roster, PLUS the current list of free agents and "officially retired" players. To be on the list of active free agents you must have participated in at least one of the last 8 tournaments (so currently, anyone going back to WP10).

NOTES:

Most of the entire story for Ironballs sits on the mound. They've shown they can hit. What they haven't shown is any ability to throw strikes consistently. It's been reported before, but since they entered the tournament in 2020, no team has walked more batters than Ironballs (172) and that inlcudes them missing a year. Out of the 9 different teams that have participated since 2020, Ironballs rank 6th in ERA (8.16), 8th in BB% (36.2%), 8th in K% (26.1%), 8th in K to walk ratio (-10.1%) and 8th in WHIP. The only team below them in those last 4 categories are the one-year participant, Temp Agency, which gave up 59 runs in 5 games. If the Ironballs can find someone to throw strikes, their offense will certainly lift them toward success, but with no new additions it's hard to imagine things are going to dramatically change.

Rule Change: Wifflepalooza adds "Swing-Off" Rule to Break Ties

 VINELAND-

Today the Office of the Commissioner, after a 4-2 YES vote by the captains, has announced a rule-change that will go into effect immediately for this year's tournament.

Going forward, any non-playoff tournament game, that is tied at the completion of 6 whole innings or at the end of an inning declared final by time-limit, shall be decided by a swing-off between the two teams. The format for this swing off will go as follows:

- Each team may choose 2-players to participate. Each player from each team will be given 2-swings. The team whose players accrue the most home runs in these 4 total swings, wins.

- Should the match be tied after the initial swing-off, each team must send forward one (1) new player to take 2-swings. Should no winner be decided, this process repeats until the top 6-players from each team have participated. At least 6 team members must go before you can repeat.

- Should the match still be tied, the order in which each team sent guys to the plate starts to repeat, but now each player only gets one (1) swing each.

- Pitches may be thrown by any member of that teams organization, and must be thrown with at least one-foot on the dirt of the pitching area on that field.

The overall premise is that this rule will prevent the tournament from getting severely off schedule as it has in years past because a game needed to go extra-innings. The longest game in WP history to date, was when the Goodfellas and Goon Squad went 13 innings in a semi-final match back in 2014 (WP8). The longest regular tournament game to-date, was when the Goon Squad and Flapacamingos went 11 innings back in 2017 (WP11). That game, originally slotted for an hour, lasted an hour and forty (1:40) minutes, throwing the next sets of games and even eventually the championship game into a significant delay. This rule aims to avoid that going forward.

If there are any further questions or concerns, please contact the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner at your earliest convenience. Thank you.

Full Schedule & Times for Wifflepalooza XIX

VINELAND - Over the weekend, the commissioner's office released the full schedule for Wifflepalooza XIX, after confirming the 6 particpants of this year's event. It will be the same 6-team field as last year's tournament, which saw Bert Brigade win their 3rd title in emphatic fashion.

As has become tradition, the defending champions will open the tournament on Field 1 at 11am, a reward for winning the year before is that you get the first game on the nicest field before things get super hot. This year's version of that sees the Bert Brigade, fresh off of that 3rd title, facing off with the notorious Goondingos to kick things off.

A rematch of last year's title game comes our way at 1pm, which sees the PA Pork Missiles take on Bert Brigade on Field 1. We also get rematches of both semi-finals, seeing the Goodfellas get another crack at the PA Pork Missiles at 11:40am on Field 1, and the Ironballs get their shot again at Bert Brigade at 2:20p on Field 2 in the final window of the day.

The entire day kicks off as usual, with the MLW Today pregame show starting at 8am. At 9am, both fields will be open for optional batting practice. As a note from this year's rulebook, all players are asked to please not use the dirt areas (mound and home plate) for bp. All players are asked to arrive by 10:15am in order for teams to prepare and also for entry fees to be collected by tournament officials. Cash or venmo is fine. Opening ceremonies begin at 10:45am, with team intros, a ceremonial first pitch and the national anthem once again performed by Joey Diaz.

Rule Book Adjustments for 2025 - Wifflepalooza XIX

VINELAND - After some discrepancies during last year's tournament, the Office of the Commissioner has taken to clarifying, codifying and adjusting some of the rule book for this year. Listed below are the adjustments made for 2025.

- Playing Surface Integrity Clause (Rule 13)

This new piece added for 2025 is in response to the condition of the playing surface as the day wore on. As has been the case for years, teams that are off/warming up will use the dirt areas to warm up, but this causes significant wear and tear that cannot be maintained by tournament officials throughout the day.

13.    UPON ARRIVAL AT THE COMPLEX, AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY, IT IS MANDATED THAT PLAYERS, COACHES AND FANS, RESPECT THE INTEGRITY OF THE PLAYING SURFACES. IN ORDER TO KEEP THE SURFACES AS HIGH QUALITY AS POSSIBLE THROUGHOUT THE DAY, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM USING THE DIRT AREAS FOR PRACTICE. INSTEAD, WE ASK THAT PARTICIPANTS USE THE DESIGNATED BULLPEN AREAS FOR FURTHER PRACTICE.VIOLATERS OF THIS CLAUSE ARE SUBJECT TO PENALTIES AT DISCRETION OF THE OFFICE OF THE COMMISSIONER

- Eligible Equipment Rules Codified (Rule 18)

This firming up of previous rules stemmed from a pre-tournament dispute over the types of bats to be used. The equipment rule has been in place since WP7, when Fresh Cuts got caught using a bat that was lined with aluminum. This codification includes guidelines for pitchers scuffing balls. The rule states as follows:

18.    BALLS & BATS:

NO OUTSIDE BATS ARE PERMITTED FOR PLAY, PER COMMISIONER RULING AFTER THE FRESH CUTS INCIDENT OF 2013. OUTSIDE BALLS ARE ONLY PERMITTED WITH APPROVAL OF THE COMMISIONER OR DEPUTY COMMISIONER. THE ONLY BATS TO BE USED ARE THE ONES PROVIDED BY TOURNAMENT OFFICIALS.ANY EXEMPTION REQUESTS MUST BE PRESENTED TO THE OFFICE OF THE COMMISSIONER, NO LATER THAN ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE TOURNAMENT.

18A. ANY BALLS DEEMED TO BE INTENTIONALLY MODIFIED, VIA KNIFING, SLICING, DIPPING, PAINTING, ETC., WILL BE DISPOSED OF AND THE TEAM CAUGHT DOING IT WILL BE PENALIZED, AS A FIRST OFFENSE, ONE (1) RUN, AS A SECOND OFFENSE, THREE (3) RUNS AND AS A THIRD OFFENSE, FIVE (5) RUNS AND THE DISQUALIFICATION OF THE PLAYER IN QUESTION.

18B. PITCHERS MAY USE OBJECTS WITHIN THE FIELD OF PLAY TO “SCUFF” THE BALLS, HOWEVER ANY OUTSIDE OBJECTS ARE NOT PERMITTED AND THE SAME PENALTIES LISTED IN 17A. APPLY.

- Foul Ball Caught by Catcher Height Change (Rule 7)

This rule has existed since the beginning, but needed some clarification after a dispute last year. Essentially, if the catcher is standing OUTSIDE of the "Dead zone" (Painted area behind strike zone) and is able to catch a batted foul ball in the air above the strike-zone, the batter is out, even if the ball is hovering above the "Dead zone"

7.    ANY BALL BATTED DIRECTLY BACK TO THE CATCHER THAT DOES NOT GO ABOVE THE STRIKE ZONE IN HEIGHT IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR PLAY.

7A. ANY BALL BATTED WITHIN THE MARKED BOUNDARIES BETWEEN THE BACKSTOP AND THE STRIKE ZONE THAT TOUCHES EITHER STRUCTURE IS A DEAD BALL.

7B. A BALL BATTED IN THE AIR WITHIN THIS ZONE MAY BE RECORDED FOR AN OUT IF CAUGHT IN THE AIR WITH THE ENTIRETY OF THE FIELDER’S BODY NOT TOUCHING THE DEAD BALL AREA, WITH AT LEAST ONE FOOT TOUCHING THE GROUND. SHOULD ANY PART OF THE FIELDER BE TOUCHING WITHIN THE ZONE, THE BALL IS RULED DEAD.

- 3-team Tiebreaker Procedure Codified (Rule 15AA)

After a dispute over last year's 3-way tie for the final 2 playoff spots, the following rule shall be

15AA.   A 3-TEAM OR MORE TIEBREAKER IMMEDIATELY GOES TO RUN DIFFERENTIAL. SHOULD THERE BE A TIE IN RUN DIFFERENTIAL AMONG 2 OF THE PARTICIPANTS, A HEAD-TO-HEAD COIN TOSS WILL DECIDE. SHOULD THERE BE A TIE IN RUN DIFFERENTIAL AMONG 3 OR MORE PARTICIPANTS, MOST RUNS SCORED WILL BE THE NEXT TIEBREAKER. SHOULD THERE BE A TIE IN MOST RUNS SCORED, THE DECISION ON WHO ADVANCES WILL FALL TO THE DISCRETION OF THE DEPUTY COMMISSIONER.

- Substitution & Flex Spot Rules Codified (Rules 21-24)

No real issue caused this change, it was verbiage and language that felt vague that brought in this modification.

              21.    IN THE BATTING ORDER, THERE MUST BE 6 SLOTS, OR 6-8 HITTERS.

21A. FLEX SPOT RULE – HOWEVER, 2 SLOTS OF THE 6 SLOTS ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE TWO PEOPLE IN THAT SPOT, THAT WILL ALTERNATE TURNS EACH TRIP THROUGH THE ORDER.

21AA. ONLY 2 SPOTS OF THE 6 SPOT BATTING ORDER MAY BE FLEXED. IF OTHER PLAYERS ARE TO BE USED, THEY MUST BE SUBSTITUTED DIRECTLY FOR A PLAYER CURRENTLY IN ONE OF THE 6 BATTING ORDER SPOTS.

22.    IF A PLAYER IS SUBSTITUTED FOR, HE CANNOT RETURN FOR THAT GAME.

22A. A COURTESY PINCH-RUNNER MAY BE USED FOR ANY PLAYER AT ANY TIME, SO LONG AS THE PINCH-RUNNER IS NOT CURRENTLY IN THE GAME ALREADY.

23.     ONCE A PITCHER IS PULLED FROM THE MOUND, HE CAN REMAIN IN THE GAME, BUT HE CANNOT PITCH AGAIN THAT GAME.

24.     EACH TEAM MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 6 PLAYERS ACTIVE FOR TOURNAMENT DAY. TEAMS CAN ACTIVATE UP TO 12 PLAYERS ON TOURNAMENT DAY.
